Official Alerts Sweep the Americas as Winter Storm and Cold Front Drive Hazardous Weather

Forecasters cite strong fronts driving heavy snow, severe storms, hazardous winds, sharp temperature swings.

Overview

  • In the United States, the National Weather Service says a winter storm through Feb. 18 will deliver heavy mountain snow—locally near 20 inches—and damaging gusts up to roughly 70–80 mph in parts of California, Nevada and Alaska.
  • Argentina’s meteorological service maintains yellow alerts for thunderstorms with hail, frequent lightning and gusts near 80 km/h across multiple provinces, alongside Zonda wind advisories in Mendoza and Patagonian wind alerts where gusts could exceed 90 km/h.
  • Heat alerts are in effect in several Argentine provinces, with maximum temperatures projected to reach about 38°C in areas including Mendoza, Entre Ríos, Corrientes, Misiones, Santa Fe, Formosa, Chaco, Santiago del Estero and Salta.
  • Mexico’s Cold Front No. 35 is crossing the northwest and north with strong winds of 60–80 km/h, a marked temperature drop, showers, possible snow or wintry mix in the Sierra Norte of Baja California and freezing rain in northern Sonora, even as highs of 40–45°C and mountain lows of −10 to −5°C occur elsewhere.
  • In Galicia, Spain, AEMET-based forecasts call for overcast skies, fog and light rain on Feb. 17 across several towns, and agencies in all regions urge precautions such as limiting travel during severe conditions, securing loose objects and seeking safe shelter during storms.
