Officer Killed, Second Critical After Detainee Opens Fire in Chicago Hospital

Police are probing how the in-custody suspect obtained a firearm during a hospital visit.

Overview

  • Two Chicago police officers were shot around 10:50 a.m. Saturday at Endeavor Health Swedish Hospital by a robbery suspect who was in custody for transport and treatment.
  • The officers, a 38-year-old 10-year veteran and a 57-year-old with 21 years of service, were taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic, where the younger officer died and the other remains in critical condition.
  • After the gunfire, the suspect fled on foot, barricaded in a nearby home, and was arrested around noon, and police said they recovered a weapon.
  • The hospital locked down during the response, later reported no active threat to patients or staff, and kept the campus closed as officers secured the area.
  • Officials said the detainee was wanded for weapons and escorted on arrival, and the investigation now centers on how he accessed a gun and whether transport and hospital security protocols need changes.
