Odisha Tallies 6,578 Hazard Deaths in Two Years, 416 Fire Deaths in Three

The minister’s Assembly reply focused on SDRF ex gratia of Rs 263.12 crore for victims.

  • Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari told the Assembly the two-year toll comprised 3,860 drownings, 2,118 snakebite deaths and 600 lightning fatalities.
  • The yearly breakdown was 3,439 deaths in 2023-24 and 3,139 in 2024-25, with SDRF ex gratia totaling Rs 263.12 crore to bereaved families.
  • District data identified major drowning clusters in Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Ganjam and Cuttack, with Mayurbhanj recording the most lightning deaths at 119.
  • Fire accidents caused 192 deaths in 2022-23, 118 in 2023-24 and 106 in 2024-25, alongside damage to property worth Rs 27.84 crore and 2,537 houses.
  • Under SDRF norms, families of the deceased receive Rs 4 lakh, injured victims get fixed aid based on hospital stay, and grants are provided for full or partial house damage.
