Odisha Proposes Revising English Spellings of 24 Places, Including Seven Districts

A public notice opens a 15-day objection window to standardise transliteration with Odia pronunciation.

Overview

  • The Revenue and Disaster Management Department issued the proposal on February 5 and published an annexure detailing the targeted corrections.
  • District revisions include DeogarhDebagarh, Khurda/Khordha→Khoradha, Khondmal→Kandhamal, Balasore→Baleshwar, KendraparaKendrapada, Keonjhar→Kendujhar, and NayagarhNayagada.
  • Additional changes cover smaller places such as AngulAnugol, Jatni→Jatani, Rairakhol→Redhakhol, Keonjhargarh→Kendujhargarh, Podia→Padia, and Bolagarh→Bolagada.
  • Stakeholders have 15 days to submit written objections with supporting documents, late filings will not be considered, and the government may proceed if none are received.
  • Officials say the effort restores original Odia forms and standardises records, echoing earlier changes like Orissa→Odisha in 2011, while the BJD has criticised the proposal as a diversion.
