Odisha Crime Branch Opens Probe Into Bhubaneswar Lynching After Alleged Assault

Fresh suspensions underscore a forensic-led push for accountability.

Overview

  • The lynching, which occurred Thursday after two women reported an attempted assault near Balianta on Bhubaneswar’s outskirts, left GRP constable Soumya Ranjan Swain dead and his companion Om Prakash Rout injured.
  • CID Crime Branch investigators began work Sunday after the chief minister’s order a day earlier, taking over two Balianta police cases that separately cover the alleged assault and the mob killing.
  • Police suspended a sub-inspector, an assistant sub-inspector, an Odisha Armed Police Force member and a PCR-van constable, disengaged two home guards, and shifted the Balianta station chief as the role of first responders comes under review.
  • Officers said 11 people have been arrested in the lynching case and that teams led by SP Anirudha Routray and DSP Ratnaprava Satpathy will use forensic analysis and a dog squad to test the competing accounts.
  • Public response has ranged from BJD and Congress protests pressing for tougher action or a judicial probe to the survivor women asking authorities to free some detained locals they described as saviours.
