Odisha Crime Branch Arrests Prime Accused in GRP Constable Lynching

The case tests police accountability alongside the scope of the anti-lynching law.

Overview

  • Crime Branch officers said Thursday they arrested Chinu, also known as Ranjit Patra, as the prime suspect and confirmed 13 people are now in custody.
  • The killing followed a May 7 crash near the Ramachandrapur bridge in Balianta after two women on a scooter alleged the constable tried to sexually assault them.
  • Investigators said they used circulating videos to identify attackers and allege the prime suspect hit the constable on the head with a bamboo stick after his hands and legs were tied with ropes.
  • Relatives and a witness said local police failed to stop the beating, and four junior personnel have been suspended as the Balianta station chief was moved.
  • Police recorded an attempt-to-rape case against the deceased based on the women’s complaint, and the Crime Branch chief said the anti-lynching clause applies only if a bias motive is found.
