Obesity and Aging Share a Molecular Brake on Memory, Virginia Tech Study Finds

This animal work has prompted a funded CRISPR trial to test whether lowering the K63 signal can prevent diet-driven memory loss.

  • The team found that young rats fed a high-fat diet rapidly develop the same elevated K63 baseline and related memory impairments seen in much older rats.
  • Earlier experiments from the group showed that reducing K63 with targeted gene editing improved memory in aged rats, giving the new work a mechanistic rationale for intervention.
  • The project received a $410,000 grant from the National Institute on Aging and has launched a longitudinal preclinical study that will follow rats on high-fat versus normal diets and deploy CRISPR-based tools to lower K63 before obesity develops.
