Obama Presidential Center to Open to Public on Juneteenth With Free Weekend and Summer Lineup

The Foundation plans to use the campus’s mix of open public spaces and a ticketed museum to drive local engagement and year-round civic programming.

Overview

  • The Obama Foundation released the opening-weekend and summer schedule on May 27 and confirmed an invitation-only dedication with President Obama on June 18 followed by a public opening on June 19.
  • Most of the 19-acre campus will be freely accessible but museum entry requires a timed ticket and opening-weekend tickets sold out within hours with Illinois Free Day reservations booked through October.
  • Opening weekend, June 19–21, will feature live music, DJs, dance performances, library storytime, family activities like face painting and photo booths, and sports and play stations with Chicago team mascots.
  • Summer programming includes a 'You Are America' series for the nation’s 250th anniversary, biweekly 'Symphony of the Soil' garden gatherings from July 12 through Sept. 20, an Aug. 4 birthday celebration and a weekly walk/run club starting Aug. 6.
  • Organizers have outlined operational details such as timed-entry museum access, transit and shuttle options, local hiring and community partnerships with groups like Urban Growers Collective to manage visitor flow and center use.
