Oaxaca Mayor Joel Bravo Killed, Parties Dispute Whether He Sought Protection

The clash over whether the mayor asked for security raises questions about possible omissions in state and federal protection efforts.

Overview

  • Joel Ángel Bravo Martínez was shot dead outside his home in San Miguel Amatitlán by a group of armed men on June 13, and the Fiscalía General del Estado de Oaxaca has opened criminal and forensic investigations into the killing.
  • State and federal security bodies have deployed tactical forces in the Mixteca region and say they are coordinating operations to find and arrest those responsible and that the crime will not go unpunished.
  • The national leader of PAN, Jorge Romero Herrera, says Bravo warned for his life and formally requested protection that never arrived and has demanded probes into omissions and the intellectual authors of the attack.
  • Governor Salomón Jara Cruz responded that Bravo had not filed complaints or requested protection before his death and rejected media suggestions of any links between his administration and criminal groups while asking for proof of such claims.
  • The killing follows a string of recent attacks on local officials in Oaxaca, including a June 11 shooting that wounded another mayor, and it risks further weakening local governance and prompting new state security measures and federal scrutiny.
