Oakland Public Works Employee Shot Dead While Walking Dog in Hills

Homicide detectives are investigating the killing and have asked the public for tips, photos and video to help identify a suspect.

Overview

  • Officers responded about 6:15 a.m. Tuesday to reports near Old Quarry Loop and Leona Drive in the East Oakland Hills and found a man with apparent gunshot wounds who was pronounced dead at the scene.
  • The City of Oakland identified the victim as 47-year-old Jermaine Newton, a Public Works maintenance worker whose family said he was walking his dog when he was shot.
  • The Oakland Police Homicide Division processed the scene, temporarily closed nearby roads and is treating the case as an active homicide while detectives follow leads.
