Oakland Man Arrested After Five Alameda County Vehicles Stolen From Garage

Rapid recoveries by automated license-plate readers show the county can quickly locate stolen fleet vehicles.

Overview

  • County deputies found the Alameda County Parking Garage at 165 13th Street in Oakland had been burglarized early Sunday and reported five vehicles taken.
  • Investigators used automated license-plate-reader data to locate and recover four of the stolen cars within about a 1.5-mile radius on the same day.
  • A 2025 blue Ford Explorer was tracked later Sunday and officers arrested 56-year-old Darryl Roach, who is being held at Santa Rita Jail on suspicion of burglary and possession of a stolen vehicle.
  • The sheriff’s office said it will inventory the recovered vehicles and currently believes no equipment was taken from inside the cars.
  • Officials have opened a criminal probe into the thefts and will review county fleet and garage security to prevent similar incidents in the future.
