Oakland Hills Unveils Reimagined Clubhouse Four Years After Fire

The steel-built replica preserves heritage to help secure marquee championships such as a U.S. Open in 2034.

Overview

  • OAKLAND HILLS COUNTRY CLUB opened its 110,000-square-foot clubhouse Monday with media tours, marking the first full return since the 2022 blaze.
  • The new building mirrors the 1922 design with 10 white pillars and cost about $100 million, funded by insurance proceeds and member assessments.
  • Amenities now include larger men’s and women’s locker rooms, three kitchens, ballrooms, dining rooms, lounges, outdoor balconies, a cigar room, a fitness facility, and new support buildings.
  • During the 2022 fire, firefighters and staff saved much of the club’s memorabilia, though about 10 prized items were lost and later replaced, and surveillance video showed workers using a propane torch shortly before the blaze.
  • The reopening strengthens the club’s bid to host top events, with the USGA scheduling the U.S. Open for 2034 and other championships on the calendar.
