Oahu Surfer Severely Bitten by Shark Near Cromwell’s Beach

Doctors say he should make a full recovery in about six weeks.

Overview

  • Koa Smith, a 38-year-old Oahu native and longtime surfer, was bitten on both legs while surfing near Cromwell’s Beach and fought back before paddling to shore where bystanders called for help.
  • The attack left a roughly 10-inch wound on his left calf and a 5-inch gash on his right foot, and he has undergone multiple surgeries at The Queen’s Medical Center.
  • Hawaii officials reported that two aggressive sharks about 8 feet long were seen in the area and Honolulu Ocean Safety posted warning signs advising people to stay out of the water.
  • Smith believes an 8-foot Galapagos shark attacked him, but that species identification is his assessment and has not been officially confirmed.
  • Following the May 30 incident, Smith’s family launched fundraising to cover medical bills and lost income, and officials say the posted advisories will remain until further safety checks are completed.
