NYU, Contract Faculty Union Reach Tentative Deal, Pausing Two-Day Strike

The deal now goes to union members for a ratification vote.

Overview

  • A tentative agreement announced Wednesday between CFU-UAW and NYU paused the walkout, and contract faculty were told to return to class while members prepare to vote.
  • Proposed terms include new salary floors of $91,000 for assistant, $100,100 for associate, and $110,100 for full rank, one-time longevity boosts, a $1 million family care fund, at least $2,500 a year for professional development, and health benefits on par with other full-time faculty.
  • The five-year contract is retroactive to September 2025 and provides extra raises in the first two years before 3.5% annual increases begin in 2027, according to union and university statements.
  • The strike began Monday at 11 a.m. after a three-hour extension of the union’s 8 a.m. deadline, drew roughly 950 non-tenure-track faculty, and affected about a quarter of NYU classes as the university used substitutes and alternate plans to keep courses running.
  • NYU called the strike unnecessary and said its offer was already generous with top-tier minimums, while union leaders framed the deal as a win that lifts most members above $100,000 and addresses long-standing pay gaps and job security concerns.
