Overview
- A preliminary bomb-squad analysis found at least one lit, tape-wrapped jar packed with nuts, bolts and a hobby fuse was an improvised explosive capable of causing serious injury or death, Commissioner Jessica Tisch said.
- The FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York are working with NYPD as testing of a second recovered device continues.
- The incident followed a small anti-Islam protest organized by right-wing activist Jake Lang and a larger counterdemonstration outside the mayor’s residence on the Upper East Side.
- Arrests included Emir Balat, 18, and an Ibrahim whose surname was reported variably as Kayumi or Nikk in connection with the devices, along with one person accused of using pepper spray and three others for disorderly conduct and traffic obstruction.
- No injuries were reported; Mayor Zohran Mamdani and his wife were inside Gracie Mansion and are safe as officers maintain a security perimeter and conduct additional sweeps.
