NYPD Reports Safest Summer on Record for Shootings and Murders

City officials credit a targeted Summer Violence Reduction Plan, and federal prosecutors have asked the mayor for information about a separate rise in antisemitic attacks.

Overview

  • The NYPD released CompStat data on Thursday showing 195 shooting incidents, 249 shooting victims and 66 murders from June 1 through Aug. 31, the fewest recorded for that period since records began in 1994.
  • Major crime fell 6.6% in August and is down about 6.2% year to date, equal to more than 5,000 fewer reported crimes citywide, with the Bronx reporting the largest borough-level drop.
  • Confirmed hate crimes rose 15.8% year to date to 425 incidents, and anti-Jewish attacks made up roughly 53.9% of confirmed hate crimes while increasing about 8% so far this year.
  • Federal prosecutors have reportedly sent a letter to Mayor Zohran Mamdani and opened an inquiry into antisemitic crimes, and city officials have boosted funding and security measures for Jewish institutions ahead of the High Holidays.
  • Not all trends moved down: felony assaults ticked up and reported rapes rose year to date in part because of repeat offenders and a legal change broadening the rape definition, and experts say national crime trends and multiple policies likely influenced the drop in shootings.
