Overview
- The NYPD published the body-worn camera footage Friday, showing a tense, minute-long encounter on the 4/5/6 platform that ended in two shots.
- Anthony Griffin, 44, had allegedly slashed three riders at about 9:40 a.m. on April 11 at 42nd Street–Grand Central, injuring an 84-year-old man, a 65-year-old man and a 70-year-old woman.
- Detectives Ryan Giuffre and Anthony Manetta confronted Griffin and ordered him to drop the machete more than 20 times, with the video capturing him saying “Shoot me” and “I am Lucifer.”
- Giuffre fired twice as Griffin advanced with the blade raised, and Griffin was later pronounced dead at Bellevue Hospital.
- Police say an internal investigation is underway, and they note the NYPD’s practice of releasing bodycam video after officer-involved shootings.
