NYPD Confirms IED Thrown Outside Gracie Mansion as Two Arrested, Federal Probe Underway

Federal authorities are reviewing evidence for possible terrorism charges.

Overview

  • A preliminary bomb-squad analysis found at least one jar-style device packed with nuts, bolts, screws and a fuse was a functioning explosive capable of causing serious harm.
  • Two counterprotesters, identified as Emir Balat, 18, and Ibrahim Kayumi, 19, were arrested at the scene after one device was thrown and a second was dropped.
  • The demonstration, led by Jake Lang with roughly 20 supporters, drew about 125 counterprotesters, and clashes included pepper spray before the devices were recovered.
  • No injuries or property damage were reported, and six arrests were made overall for offenses that included handling the devices, pepper-spray use and disorderly conduct.
  • The FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force and federal prosecutors are working with the NYPD as forensic testing continues on a second device and investigators pursue out-of-state leads.
