NYPD Confirms IED at Gracie Mansion Protest as Federal Probe Expands

Federal terrorism investigators have joined the case.

Overview

  • A preliminary bomb-squad analysis found that a device ignited during Saturday’s dueling demonstrations was an improvised explosive capable of causing serious injury or death.
  • Police described the devices as jars wrapped in tape and packed with nuts, bolts and screws with hobby fuses, and said both recovered items extinguished without detonating and caused no injuries.
  • Two counterprotesters — Emir Balat, 18, and Ibrahim Kayumi, 19 — were arrested at the scene in connection with the devices, with charges still under review.
  • Six arrests were made overall during clashes that included the use of pepper spray, disorderly conduct and obstructing traffic, according to officials.
  • The FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force and federal prosecutors are working with the NYPD as forensic testing continues, with searches and interviews extending to Pennsylvania and reported warrants in neighboring states.
