NYC Starts Ninth Avenue Overhaul to Expand Sidewalks, Widen Bike Lane, Extend Bus Lane

DOT says the redesign prepares the Hell’s Kitchen corridor for World Cup crowds with a Vision Zero emphasis.

Overview

  • Work has begun on Ninth Avenue from West 34th to West 50th Streets to create nine-foot “super sidewalks,” widen the protected bike lane from five to nine feet, and extend the curbside bus lane to 50th Street.
  • DOT’s timeline calls for repaving and building concrete pedestrian islands through mid-June, lane-marking on non‑game days during the World Cup, and project completion by late summer or early fall.
  • Roughly half a mile of curbside bus lane will be painted red to aid enforcement, with bus-only hours set for 7–10 a.m. and 4–7 p.m., seven days a week, serving the M34A and M11 routes.
  • The agency cites Ninth Avenue’s Vision Zero priority status after one death and 36 serious injuries in recent years, plus crowding tied to the Lincoln Tunnel and the Port Authority Bus Terminal.
  • Advocates including Transportation Alternatives welcomed the plan, which builds on a 2007 protected bike lane and a 2023 “super sidewalk” pilot further south on Ninth Avenue.
