Overview

  • The city announced Tuesday that starting pay for emergency snow shovelers will be $30 per hour and that hours beyond 40 in a week will be paid at $45 per hour.
  • Registration has been moved to the fall so applicants who sign up by Nov. 30 qualify for a paid four-hour orientation in December and for expedited payroll processing.
  • The first public registration event is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 19, in the Bronx and additional borough events are set for later in September and October.
  • Officials said the Department of Sanitation will eliminate the need for applicants to bring printed photos by taking photos at events, assign pre-registered workers to DSNY garages, and aims to issue paychecks to pre-registered shovelers within roughly two weeks of work to avoid past four-to-six week delays.
  • City Hall said more than 7,800 New Yorkers joined the program last winter to clear crosswalks, bus stops and fire hydrants, the effort is paid from the city’s dedicated snow budget, and seasonal forecasts such as El Niño could affect how heavily the program is used this winter.
