Overview
- City DOT and DDC, which broke ground Tuesday, began a rebuild of East 161st Street to give the Bx6 a protected center-running lane by Yankee Stadium.
- The plan adds concrete boarding islands, curb and median extensions, new lighting, 370 ADA ramps, 57 trees and about 8,000 plantings to speed boarding and make crossings safer.
- The Grand Concourse underpass will be reserved for buses, though reports differ on whether the bus-only rule applies westbound only or in both directions.
- Crews have already started work on parts of East 163rd Street, and agencies say they will phase construction around home games with major pieces targeted for 2026 and full completion in 2028.
- Riders who rely on the Bx6—about 25,000 each day—could see faster, more reliable trips, but advocates note past painted lanes were blocked by parked cars, so concrete barriers and steady enforcement will be key.
