NWS Issues Rapid Snow Squall Warnings Across Central New York Through Late Morning

Drivers are urged to delay trips as fast-moving bands slash visibility to near zero.

  • At 10:16 a.m., forecasters tracked a dangerous squall from near Weedsport to near Arkport moving east at about 45 mph.
  • The alert runs until 11:30 a.m. for Yates, Seneca, Cayuga, Onondaga, Steuben, Schuyler, Chemung, Tompkins, Cortland, Tioga and Broome counties.
  • Hazards include intense bursts of snow, blowing snow, and wind gusts over 35 mph that can drop visibility below a quarter mile, with at least one report of lightning.
  • The Weather Service warns that travel can become dangerous within minutes and advises avoiding or delaying driving; if caught, slow down, use lights, and allow extra stopping distance.
  • Earlier short-fused updates included a 9:17 a.m. warning for Tioga County until 9:45 a.m. and a 9:21 a.m. alert for Bradford and Susquehanna counties, with impacts reported along Routes 6 and 15 near Mansfield and Blossburg.
