NWS Confirms Third EF1 Tornado Near Flagstaff

The confirmation refines the storm's footprint, affecting damage estimates and possible aid decisions.

Overview

  • The National Weather Service confirmed that an EF1 tornado touched down near Wing Mountain on Oct. 21, about 3.5 miles north of Bellemont.
  • Damage surveys estimated a roughly 2.3-mile path and peak winds near 110 mph that uprooted and snapped large ponderosa pines in forested areas.
  • Mapped radar data from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet corroborated the ground survey with a ground track just over 2 miles and a maximum width up to about 600 yards.
  • The Wing Mountain touchdown is the third EF1 confirmed from the Oct. 21 outbreak after an EF1 near Prescott and an EF1 in Heber-Overgaard that injured one person.
  • Local officials, volunteers and federal partners are continuing surveys and cleanup in remote forest terrain, work that will inform insurance claims and any requests for state or federal aid.
