NWS Confirms EF1 Tornado Traveled About 17 Miles Through Ray County, Missouri

The confirmation refines peak wind and path measurements with additional survey work still under way

Overview

  • The National Weather Service confirmed that an EF1 tornado touched down Monday night in southwestern Ray County and stayed on the ground for roughly 17.4 miles with peak winds near 95 mph.
  • Survey teams mapped a peak path width of about 100 yards and found tree damage, two damaged power poles, an outbuilding and an empty livestock trailer along the track as the twister crossed Highway 10 and Highway 13.
  • NWS crews preliminarily identified a separate EF0 event in Fillmore, Andrew County, at about 8:11 p.m. Monday and said further surveys are needed to finalize that rating.
  • The same storm system produced multiple tornadoes in nearby Kansas; the Topeka office reported seven confirmed touchdowns including four EF1s, and officials say no injuries have been reported from the outbreak.
  • The EF rating comes from post‑event ground surveys that estimate wind speeds from damage, survey work is continuing, and local communities face downed trees, power outages and renewed flooding risk as crews clean up and residents document losses for insurance.
