NVIDIA Shrinks and Speeds DLSS 5 Model

Reduced model size and lower VRAM use should make high-resolution play more practical for current GPUs.

Overview

  • NVIDIA announced on October 13 that an updated DLSS 5 model has been released that cuts the neural network footprint by 24 percent to about 118 million parameters.
  • The company says the October update reduces 4K VRAM use by roughly 20 percent and runs about twice as fast as the version shown in March.
  • A new Frame Generation performance preset called Preset C uses a lighter algorithm that NVIDIA says can boost frame rates by up to about 35 percent with minor image-quality trade-offs.
  • The faster, smaller model will roll into live games next month with the update reaching NBA 2K27 in mid-October and official DLSS 5 integrations scheduled for Hogwarts Legacy on November 5 and Where Winds Meet later in November.
  • NVIDIA emphasizes developers keep detailed artistic control and several studios have already tuned or toned down DLSS 5 implementations to limit noticeable changes to character visuals, which could ease community concerns while widening hardware compatibility.
