Nvidia Demos Neural Texture Compression Cutting VRAM Use 85%

A compact neural decoder on GPU AI cores rebuilds textures on demand to shrink installs.

  • Nvidia, at its GTC 2026 session, showed a Tuscan Villa scene dropping VRAM from about 6.5GB to 970MB with no visible loss in image quality.
  • Neural Texture Compression stores each texture as small learned features and uses a tiny network on the GPU to reconstruct texels deterministically during rendering.
  • Because it compresses texture data far beyond standard block formats like BCN, the method can reduce game installs, patches, and download sizes.
  • Nvidia also demonstrated Neural Materials that encode material behavior into a compact latent, reaching up to 7.7x faster 1080p shading in one demo scene.
  • The NTC SDK is in beta on GitHub and no released games use it yet, though Microsoft’s DirectX Cooperative Vectors and Intel and AMD demos point to cross-vendor support.
