Nvidia and Corning Strike U.S. Optics Deal to Build Three Plants for AI Data Centers

The deal aims to ease AI data bottlenecks by moving links from copper to optical fiber.

Overview

  • A multiyear partnership announced Wednesday between Nvidia and Corning will add three optical manufacturing plants in North Carolina and Texas, lift U.S. connectivity capacity tenfold, and create more than 3,000 jobs.
  • According to a regulatory filing, Nvidia obtained roughly $500 million in share rights and warrants, including 3 million shares at $0.0001 each and warrants to buy up to 15 million shares at $180.
  • At an investor event, Corning said it expects to reach an annualized sales pace of $20 billion by year-end and is targeting $30 billion by the end of 2028 and $40 billion by 2030.
  • Corning shares jumped by double digits and Nvidia rose several percent following the announcement, reflecting investor confidence that optical networking will be key to scaling AI systems.
  • Analysts say the move advances co-packaged optics, which places fiber links next to chips to boost bandwidth and cut power use and signal loss, and they note Nvidia’s earlier investments in Coherent and Lumentum to secure optical components.
