Nueces River Forecast to Crest Near 40 Feet, Threatening Three Rivers and George West

Multiagency teams have staged boats, helicopters and shelters to urge residents to move to higher ground.

The Texas Division of Emergency Management has issued a warning for residents in South Texas communities along the Nueces River. Floodwaters could rise above its banks and onto roads, which could be under water for days.

The bridge on FM 481 in Uvalde County collapsed on July 17 because of rising floodwaters along the Nueces River. Flooding will continue later this week in areas downstream, such as Three Rivers and George West.

Overview

  • The National Water Prediction Service is forecasting the Nueces to crest around 40 feet on Friday, a level that would put the river well above major flood stage and flood low-lying areas from Three Rivers south toward Lake Corpus Christi.
  • Emergency responders have shifted from rescue operations upstream to pre‑staging resources in Live Oak County, with the Alamo Area All Hazards team, San Antonio Fire, STRAC, DPS and Parks and Wildlife positioning boats, helicopters and shelters.
  • Live Oak County has not ordered broad mandatory evacuations but officials are urging people in flood‑prone areas to seek higher ground now and to use prepared shelters or available buses if conditions worsen.
  • Runoff from mid‑July storms pushed record river rises downstream and already flooded upstream towns such as Camp Wood, Uvalde and Cotulla, which crested at just over 29 feet on July 22 before receding.
  • Rising inflows have lifted Choke Canyon roughly 13 feet and will feed Lake Corpus Christi, a boost to reservoir storage that also complicates flood management and could extend road, utility and home recovery for affected communities.
