Overview
- The tourist, visiting the Henbury Meteorites Conservation Zone about 145 km from Alice Springs on April 19, fell nearly two metres into a sewage pit when a long-drop toilet floor collapsed.
- With no mobile coverage, her family drove for help until a passing tradesman dismantled part of the structure, lowered a rope, and used his vehicle to pull her out in about 45 minutes.
- She was taken to hospital in Alice Springs and treated for minor cuts.
- NT WorkSafe said initial inquiries show the toilet collapsed into the pit and confirmed it is investigating the case as a dangerous incident.
- The toilet has been cordoned off, and the case has renewed concern about remote pit toilets, which rely on sound floors and regular upkeep in areas with long distances and patchy phone service.
