NT Floods Peak as Tropical Low Drives Heavy Rain Into South-East Queensland

Authorities race to relocate remote NT residents as the Daly River keeps rising despite Katherine’s brief reprieve.

Overview

  • Forecasters expect up to 150mm across central and south‑east Queensland today, with locally higher falls north of the Sunshine Coast under a current severe weather warning.
  • Emergency alerts were issued for Rubyvale and Sapphire as flood watches covered dozens of rivers, and road closures spread across the Wide Bay–Burnett, South Burnett and Sunshine Coast.
  • The Katherine River peaked near 19.2 metres on Saturday before easing to just below major early Monday, while the Daly River rose past 14.7 metres and may remain at major flood levels for days.
  • Helicopters and fixed‑wing aircraft evacuated about 400 people from Daly River and around 200 from Palumpa to Darwin, and shelters remain open in Katherine as the Stuart Highway closure isolates the town.
  • The Daintree Ferry in Far North Queensland remains out of service after breaking its moorings, with the council indicating the site will not be safe for recovery operations until at least mid‑week.
