Overview
- Footage from a seatbelt-detection camera recorded an unrestrained nine-year-old sitting on a driver's lap and steering on the Great Western Highway near Mount Lambie at about 1:35am on 7 March.
- NSW Police allege the 45-year-old man operated the pedals and was experiencing significant fatigue at the time.
- Following inquiries, officers visited the man's Lightning Ridge home on 11 March and issued a court attendance notice.
- The man was charged with reckless and negligent driving, driving without proper control, and carrying a passenger without proper restraints.
- He is due to appear at Walgett Local Court on 28 April, as Transport for NSW rolls out upgraded cameras that detect seatbelt and phone offences in both directions over the next six months.
