NSW Awards 12GWh of Long-Duration Battery Contracts as Pumped Hydro Declared Critical Infrastructure

LTESA contracts are de-risking 8-hour storage to speed delivery of reliable, renewable power.

Overview

  • ASL completed New South Wales’ largest long-duration storage tender, awarding six battery projects totaling about 1.17GW/11.98GWh with 8–11.5 hour durations.
  • The winners are Neoen’s 330MW/3,500MWh Great Western, Ark Energy’s 250MW/2,414MWh Bowmans Creek, BW ESS’s 233MW/2,676MWh Bannaby, FRV’s 158MW/1,440MWh Armidale East, Bridge Energy/Energy Vault’s 100MW/870MWh Ebor, and Iberdrola’s 100MW/1,080MWh Kingswood.
  • NSW designated two pumped hydro projects totaling roughly 22GWh as critical infrastructure, including ACEN’s 11,990MWh Phoenix and ZEN Energy’s proposed 2,000MW, 16,000MWh Lake Burragorang facility.
  • Iberdrola opened the 65MW/130MWh Smithfield battery in western Sydney, co-located with its 123MW gas peaker and approved as a State Significant Development.
  • Valent Energy’s 150MW/437MWh Armidale BESS secured final planning approval and AEMO clause 5.3.4a compliance, while ASL set the next LDES tenders at 12GWh in Q2 2026 and again in 2027 alongside a 2.5GW generation procurement starting in Q2 2026.
