NSPCC Warns Christmas Period Raises Risks for Children, Launches TV and Radio Appeal

The charity urges adults to report concerns through its helpline this holiday season.

Overview

  • Last December the NSPCC Helpline received 5,384 contacts from adults, about three quarters relating to abuse or neglect.
  • Across December 24 to January 4, practitioners handled almost 2,000 contacts, with 17% leading to referrals to local authorities or emergency services.
  • Regional pressure was evident, with 251 referrals in the South West and nearly 340 in the South East, most linked to abuse.
  • Childline provided more than 2,700 winter counselling sessions about abuse, with support available around the clock over Christmas.
  • The new campaign, inspired by a survivor’s story, highlights holiday risk drivers such as financial strain, alcohol use and prolonged time at home.
