NS to Add Numbers to Every Train Line Starting in 2027

Traveler tests next week will shape how numbers appear in apps and on station boards, and a design competition will pick a new lines map in September to improve passenger information during disruptions.

Overview

  • NS announced that all its train services will receive numeric line identifiers and that the system will be introduced from 2027.
  • The operator says line numbers will make individual trains easier to recognise and will help staff give clearer instructions when services are disrupted or work affects routes.
  • Next week NS will run traveler tests of how numbers are shown on station displays and in the NS app, using passenger feedback to refine the presentation.
  • NS has launched a design competition for a new station lines map that includes numbers, with the winning design due to be chosen in September.
  • Passenger group Rover, which has campaigned for numbering for years, welcomed the change and expects it will help travellers see at a glance which services run or are rerouted during engineering work, while NS emphasises keeping the system simple and accessible for all users.
