NRG to Restore Reliant Stadium Name for Texans’ 25th Season

FIFA's no-sponsor rules create a summer signage window that NRG says it will use to install Reliant branding.

Overview

  • NRG Energy, which won approval Wednesday from the Harris County Sports & Convention Corporation, will revert NRG Stadium to its original Reliant Stadium name.
  • FIFA requires generic venue names for the 2026 World Cup, so the site will be called Houston Stadium through the July 4 Round of 16, and NRG signs have already come down.
  • Reliant branding is slated to go up in August and September in time for Texans training camp and the franchise’s 25th NFL season.
  • NRG says a recent survey of Houston-area customers showed 90% support for bringing back the Reliant name.
  • NRG holds naming rights through 2032, and the contract covers costs and tasks such as new signage, updated letterhead and web domains, and renaming NRG Parkway; Reliant originally secured a 30-year, $300 million deal in 2002 before NRG rebranded the venue in 2014.
