Overview
- Duke Energy’s Robinson plant in Hartsville, South Carolina, won a subsequent license renewal from federal regulators that extends operations to 2050, 20 years past the current 2030 end date.
- The single-unit reactor produces 759 megawatts of carbon-free power, which Duke says is enough electricity for about 570,000 homes.
- The plant supports nearly 500 jobs and contributes roughly $28 million each year in local taxes across Darlington County and the Pee Dee region.
- Robinson is the second unit in Duke’s fleet to secure this type of renewal after Oconee in 2025, and the company says it will seek similar extensions for all 11 operating reactors.
- Federal energy officials launched the UPRISE initiative to add output from existing plants, and Duke notes nuclear already supplies about 51% of its customers’ electricity in the Carolinas.
