NPP Fields NEHU Professor D.R.L. Nonglait for Shillong Lok Sabha Bypoll

NPP named D.R.L. Nonglait as its candidate for the Shillong by-election to fill the Lok Sabha seat left vacant after MP Ricky AJ Syngkon’s death.
Nonglait, a North-Eastern Hill University professor and Khasi Authors’ Society president, is known for pushing constitutional recognition for the Khasi language and has not decided whether to remain KAS chief.
His entry creates a direct face-off with the Voice of the People Party’s pick, NEHU academic and party spokesperson Batskhem Myrboh.
Chief Minister and NPP president Conrad K. Sangma endorsed Nonglait and said the move backs tribal identity and language, while rejecting claims it politicises the Khasi cause.
The Election Commission has not announced the polling date for the by-election.
