Overview
- Two separate rounds struck the exterior of the new Barksdale Middle School in May and July, and the district says the impacts line up with the Quail Creek Gun Range about a mile south of campus.
- Northwest ISD filed a lawsuit this week asking for a restraining order and permanent injunction to force safety changes at the range, and a judge issued a temporary order and scheduled a hearing later this month.
- Quail Creek owner David Rose told district officials that a “goober” could intentionally or accidentally fire over the range’s protective berm, and he acknowledged that additional safety features could prevent such shots.
- District leaders reported the first incident to police, had Northlake officers visit the range after the second incident, and have shifted some preopening activities to times after the range closes to reduce risk.
- Barksdale Middle School is due to open on August 12, and the near-term outcome of the court case will determine whether the range must install specific barriers or restrict firing that could reach the campus.
