Overview
- PC Jess Turnbull, 19, was struck while attending a two-vehicle collision on the A189 Spine Road in Cramlington and was taken to hospital before dying on Wednesday surrounded by loved ones.
- The vehicle that hit her was a black Mercedes CLC and the 73-year-old driver arrested at the scene was later re-arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and released on bail.
- Officers from Northumbria Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit are handling the inquiry and have asked anyone who was in the area at about 11.10pm on Monday or who has dashcam footage to contact the force.
- The force has asked the public not to leave tributes at the crash scene for safety reasons and to place flowers at the Northumbria Police headquarters while the family has requested privacy.
- Turnbull joined Northumbria Police in September 2025 and her death, the first on-duty fatality for the force since 2006, has left colleagues and policing leaders mourning and emphasised the risks officers face at roadside incidents.
