Northern Councils and Police Forces Approve and Propose 2026/27 Council Tax and Precept Rises

Leaders say shrinking national support plus rising care pressures are forcing reliance on council tax to close funding gaps.

Overview

  • Northumbria’s 9.45% police precept uplift was approved by the Police and Crime Panel, lifting Band A bills by £12.33 a year and Band D by £18.50 from April.
  • Durham and Darlington’s PCC confirmed a 6% policing precept rise, expected to raise about £3.5m in 2026/27 to avert a projected £6.5m shortfall.
  • The Mayor of York and North Yorkshire approved precepts that add £15 to the Band D policing charge and £9.60 to the Band D fire levy, to be collected from April.
  • East Riding of Yorkshire Council signed off a 4.99% council tax increase for 2026/27, with Band A up £62.25 a year and Band D up £93.37.
  • North Yorkshire signalled a likely 4.99% council tax rise and Westmorland & Furness will consider the same rate next week, with officials warning lower increases would force deeper cuts or reserve use.
