North Shore Bears Brunt as Severe Threat Eases and Multi-Day Rain Sets Up

Forecasters expect a stalled front to drive rounds of heavy rain through the weekend.

Overview

  • The Storm Prediction Center, which sets short-term severe risk levels, raised parts of Louisiana and Mississippi to an Enhanced risk Wednesday, with a Tornado Watch until 11 p.m. for Allen, Evangeline, St. Landry and Avoyelles parishes.
  • The strongest storms focused north of Lake Pontchartrain into southern Mississippi, where WDSU tallied about 14 tornado reports, including a long-lived cell that began near northern Tangipahoa Parish.
  • As storms moved south overnight, they weakened across Acadiana, and a cool front sagged toward the Gulf and slowed down.
  • Forecasters now call for several rounds of showers and thunderstorms Friday through Sunday, with 1.5 to 5 or more inches possible and pockets of flash flooding on low-lying roads.
  • Rain chances rise in Acadiana starting Thursday with a lower but nonzero severe risk, though short-range models still disagree on how long the soaking lasts and where the heaviest bands set up.
