North Korea Says It Fired Cruise and Anti-Ship Missiles From New Destroyer

State media touted a successful shipboard drill unverified by independent observers.

Overview

  • North Korea’s state news agency said its navy launched strategic cruise missiles and anti-ship missiles from the destroyer Choe Hyon.
  • KCNA reported that the cruise missiles flew a little over two hours and the anti-ship missiles about 33 minutes, striking targets over the Yellow Sea with high accuracy.
  • Kim Jong Un observed the exercise and, according to KCNA, praised the military’s readiness and reaffirmed that strengthening nuclear deterrence is the top priority.
  • The launches were said to come from a 5,000-ton warship that is one of two destroyers North Korea put into service last year.
  • No independent media witnessed the drill, and North Korea remains under wide international sanctions over its missile and nuclear programs.
