North Korea Reaffirms Russia Pact as TASS and KCNA Deepen Media Cooperation

The visit spotlights a joint push to harden pro-government media rules in what both sides call an information war.

Overview

  • North Korea’s top legislator, Jo Yong-won, told visiting TASS chief Andrey Kondrashov that Pyongyang will honor the 2024 Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with Russia and promote a multipolar world.
  • Choe Son-hui, North Korea’s foreign minister, told Kondrashov that sending North Korean units to Russia’s Kursk region was an example of carrying out the treaty, according to a Russian report cited by Yonhap.
  • TASS and North Korea’s state news agency KCNA said they updated their cooperation deal to coordinate coverage and counter what they describe as disinformation.
  • Kondrashov said the agreement reflects new “information war” realities and highlighted North Korea’s new National Assembly as key to building laws that bolster state media and protect what he called shared traditional values.
  • Jo briefed the TASS delegation on February’s Workers’ Party congress and the first session of the new parliament in March, using the domestic meetings to frame tighter media policy as part of the Russia partnership.
