North Korea Fires Ballistic Missile From Wonsan That Traveled More Than 700 Kilometers

The launch underscores Pyongyang’s warning that it may raise its level of deterrence as U.S.-South Korea Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises approach.

  • The South Korean military said the missile was launched from the Wonsan area and flew more than 700 kilometers toward the Sea of Japan, a move it detected and confirmed on Wednesday.

  • The Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises begin next week and are reported to run about ten days with roughly 18,000 South Korean troops and the U.S. contingent of about 28,500 personnel participating.
  • The European Union formally condemned the launch as a violation of U.N. Security Council resolutions, and the test was counted in reporting as Pyongyang’s 11th ballistic launch so far this year.
