North Carolina Sen. Terence Everitt to Resign, Exit 2026 Race for Voting-Rights Role

County Democrats will select a temporary successor under a process that avoids a special election.

Overview

  • Earving his term early, Everitt said the resignation takes effect Friday, May 1, so he can work full-time on voting rights with the North Carolina Voter Protection Alliance and withdraw from the 2026 ballot.
  • Under North Carolina law, Democratic Party officials in Wake and Granville counties will choose someone to serve out the rest of the Senate District 18 term.
  • Republicans retain a Senate supermajority in Raleigh, which means chamber control and the ability to pass bills remain unchanged for now.
  • Everitt’s seat covers parts of Wake and Granville counties and was certified in 2024 by a 128-vote margin over Republican Ashlee Bryan Adams, with a Libertarian drawing 3.2% of the vote.
  • In announcing his move, Everitt argued recent GOP-backed election rules curb access to the ballot, while Republican leaders say those changes are meant to protect election integrity.
