Normalista Students March on Insurgentes and Suspend Metrobús Service

Organizers plan to deliver a petition and stage a sit-in at Avenida Universidad 1200 to press funding and justice demands.

Overview

  • Students from multiple teacher-training schools gathered at the Ángel de la Independencia under the Federación de Estudiantes Campesinos Socialistas de México to begin a national march.
  • The contingent moved along Paseo de la Reforma and then south on Avenida Insurgentes with trucks escorting groups and traffic police opening nearby streets to let them pass.
  • Metrobús service was suspended and stations were closed along the route, causing immediate disruption to bus-rapid-transit commuters in central Mexico City.
  • Protesters carried banners and Ayotzinapa photos calling for justice while a commission of students met with the Education Ministry’s DGESuM at Avenida Universidad 1200 and blocked the avenue for several hours.
  • FECSM says its core demand is increased funding for 16 rural normal schools to fix crowded dormitories, poor dining services and weak infrastructure that affect students from remote communities.
