NOIRLab Publishes New Gemini Image of the Crystal Ball Nebula

The release gives the public a high-resolution view that anchors earlier research on the nebula’s distance, temperature, binary-driven shape.

  • NSF NOIRLab released a newly processed colour image of NGC 1514, the Crystal Ball Nebula, as part of its Legacy Imaging Program on 21–22 May 2026.
  • The picture was made from data taken with the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph on the 8.1‑metre Gemini North telescope on Maunakea and the final colour processing was completed recently.
  • NGC 1514 sits about 1,500 light-years away so the light in the photo left the nebula roughly 1,500 years ago and the gas is heated to an estimated 15,000 kelvin by the exposed stellar core.
  • At the nebula’s centre is a long‑period binary with an orbital period of about nine years, and researchers say interacting, asymmetric winds from the pair have sculpted the nebula’s uneven, lumpy shells.
  • The release is framed as outreach that consolidates earlier scientific findings rather than a new theoretical breakthrough and includes acknowledgments of the observatory sites and cultural sensitivities tied to Maunakea.
