NOAA Ups Aurora Outlook: Kp 5 Could Bring Northern Lights to 15 U.S. States Tonight

NOAA’s upgrade reflects high-speed solar wind from a coronal hole compressing into a co-rotating region that elevates geomagnetic activity.

Overview

  • Minor to moderate geomagnetic storms are possible Sunday night, building on earlier G1 guidance for Feb. 15.
  • The aurora view line extends across most of Alaska and parts of Washington, the Idaho panhandle, most of Montana, northeastern Wyoming, North Dakota and most of South Dakota.
  • Visibility may also reach the upper Midwest and Northeast, including Minnesota, most of Wisconsin, northern Iowa, northern Michigan, far northern Upstate New York, and the northern reaches of Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine.
  • Best viewing typically occurs between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. under clear, dark skies away from city lights.
  • Real-time conditions will govern visibility, with southward Bz orientation, solar-wind speed, cloud cover and light pollution as key factors; NOAA’s 30-minute aurora map and aurora apps offer live updates.
