No Kings’ Rallies Sweep U.S. as Organizers Target Record Turnout

Organizers aim to convert mass turnout into midterm leverage.

Overview

  • Protesters with the No Kings movement rallied nationwide on Saturday at more than 3,100 planned events across all 50 states, with organizers projecting participation in the millions and some outlets relaying estimates as high as nine million.
  • The flagship rally in St. Paul, Minnesota centered on recent federal shootings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti, with Bruce Springsteen, Joan Baez, Jane Fonda and Sen. Bernie Sanders featured and local planners telling officials to expect up to 100,000 at the Capitol grounds.
  • Large turnouts were expected in major cities including New York, Washington and Los Angeles, while Boston prepared Boston Common for a noon rally with Gov. Maura Healey, Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Ed Markey and a Dropkick Murphys performance.
  • Coalition groups including 50501, Indivisible, the ACLU and MoveOn led the third nationwide day to oppose what they call authoritarian policies such as the Iran war and expanded immigration raids, with a deliberate push into suburbs, rural areas and battleground states.
  • The White House dismissed the rallies, with spokesperson Abigail Jackson calling them “Trump Derangement Therapy Sessions,” as organizers also highlighted sister events abroad and said turnout could top the roughly five million in June and seven million in October.
